FAQ
Questions, answered plainly
Everything people usually ask before their first scan.
Is SpyApp really free?
Yes. Scanning files, reading reports, voting and commenting are completely free and require no account. The site is supported by advertising.
What file types can I scan?
Any type — documents (PDF, Word, Excel), programs and executables, archives (ZIP, RAR), scripts, images and Android APKs. Every file is checked against malware signatures and structural red flags; Android APKs additionally get deep app analysis: permissions, certificate and code inspection.
Do I need to install anything?
No. SpyApp runs entirely in your browser — you upload a file and our servers analyze it. Nothing is ever installed on your device.
What is an APK file?
APK (Android Package) is the file format Android apps are distributed in. When you download an app outside the Play Store — from a website, forum or chat message — you receive an APK file.
How accurate are the verdicts?
Verdicts combine dozens of detection engines, permission analysis and certificate checks. No scanner is perfect: a Safe verdict means no known indicators were found, not an absolute guarantee. Always prefer official app stores when possible.
What does the Warning verdict mean?
The file isn't confirmed malware, but it shows risky traits: permissions beyond its purpose, aggressive ad/tracking SDKs, or an unexpected signing certificate. Read the report details before deciding.
Can you scan an app already installed on my phone?
Not directly — we scan APK files. You can export an installed app's APK with a backup tool and upload it, or search our database for the app's name to find existing reports.
Is my upload private?
Yes. Scans don't require an account, uploads are dissociated from your identity, and files are kept only as automated threat-research samples. See our privacy policy for details.
What's the maximum file size?
100 MB per file. That covers the vast majority of documents, programs and Android apps.
What is stalkerware?
Commercial spyware marketed as 'phone monitoring' or 'parental control' but often abused to secretly track partners — reading messages, recording calls and reporting GPS location. Detecting it is a core focus of SpyApp.
Someone may have put spyware on my phone. What should I do?
Scan any suspicious APKs you can find, review apps with accessibility or device-admin access, and consider a factory reset. If you're concerned for your safety, contact local support organizations before removing the app — removal can alert the person who installed it.
Can I report a false positive or false negative?
Yes — use the comment section on the file's report page, vote, or contact us directly. Community reports feed back into our detection quality.
Do you scan iOS apps (IPA files)?
You can upload an IPA like any other file and it will be checked against malware signatures and structural red flags. Deep iOS-specific app analysis (like we do for Android APKs) is not available yet.
